Praline is a classic candy containing at a minimum nuts and sugar; cream or milk is a common third ingredient. Originally inspired in France, there are three varieties of pralines: European Nut, Belgian soft-centre, and American cream-based pralines. While each of the praline styles differ in taste and texture, the treats are one of the most loved confections in its respective region.
Michelle’s Pralines are a form of the American cream-based style praline, which is a creamy combination of nuts, sugar, milk, and lots of love!
American Cream-Based Pralines are typically made by combining sugar, butter, milk, and nuts in a pot over medium-high heat, and stirring continuously until the mixture has reached a thick texture with a brown color. The mixture is then usually dropped (in a shape of choice) onto a buttered surface, and left to cool.
The praline recipe arrived in Louisiana through French settlers. Although settlers initially made the pralines with almonds, they soon realized that Louisiana contained a vast amount pecan trees. Generations of African-Americans crafted what is now known as “pecan or pu con candy” in many parts of Louisiana, such as Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
